You are probably wondering how many wood pellets are needed for heating during the heating season.
The average consumption of wood pellets for a residential property (house) with an average level of insulation (5 cm external thermal insulation), windows and doors up to five years old, without thermally insulated glazing, and a standard ceiling height of 2.7–2.8 m ranges from 15–17 kg/m³ of heated space.
For example, a 170 m² house with a ceiling height of 2.7 m has a volume of 459 m³. At a consumption rate of 15 kg/m³, the calculation is: 459 m³ × 15 kg = 6,885 kg, or approximately 6.9 tonnes. Based solely on the floor area of the heated property, this corresponds to an average consumption of 6,885 kg / 170 m² = 40.5 kg/m².
Pellet consumption also depends on several other factors, including:
- the number of heating hours per day,
- the average outdoor temperature,
- the desired indoor temperature, and
- the installed boiler capacity.
However, the calculation above provides a useful estimate of pellet consumption for a typical boiler operating regime during the heating season.
